My friend Bill and I fished the North Fork of the Mokelumne below Salt Springs Reservoir on Monday afternoon 8/25/08. I had previously fished this stretch with some friends from the Diablo valley Fly Fishers for teh trout opener back in 2005, but I had not been back since. The flow was much lower this time, 30-40 CFS instead of 1200! Bill and I managed to catch a mixture of Rainbow Trout and Brown trout on dry flies, with Bill catching 5 to every 1 of mine!
Jerk! He had to rub it in too... Elk Hair Caddis and E/C Caddis were the flies of choice. The fish ranged from 4 to 10 inches and were real scrappy. We fished from about 3:00 to 7:00, having fun exploring new waters. We then headed back home because my wife Cindy had made lasagne for dinner and we were starving. We arrived home, ate a great dinner, drank beers until 01:30, discussed where to fish the next morning (and what time we REALLY wanted to get up) and then crashed.
The next morning I searched high and low trying to find my box with hoppers in it. I took over an hour to find something that was right in front of me... Not a great start. We decided to hit the Mokelumne below Tiger Creek Afterbay. we had a blast catching more Rainbows and Browns. Again Bill outfished me by 4 or 5 to one. We started at the whitewater put-in and fished downstream a little ways, before doubling back up and working towards the dam. Again, the fish responded fairly well to caddis dry flies. Bill also had good success fishing a Copper John or a Micro Mayfly about 12" under a foam dot. Dot-fishing he likes to call it. We packed it in around 1:30 and headed back to the house. I had to get ready to go electro-shocking at Caples and Bill headed home.
The only drawback was forgetting the camera at home...
